Santa Cruz pyracantha, also called firethorn, is a perfect substitute for the larger standard forms of pyracantha if you’re looking for something shorter. Effective as a small screen, or wide-spreading space filler, this attractive evergreen provides interest throughout the entire growing season. Its graceful arching habit makes a beautiful choice for creating an espalier in the garden but it is just as gorgeous left in its natural form. While plants can grow to 6-feet tall, they are easily kept pruned to a much shorter height for use as a shrubby ground cover. In spring masses of small white flowers emerge that are irresistible to bees. The flowers are followed by beautiful orange to red fruit in the winter that attract many birds to the landscape. For best results plant in a sunny location in well-draining soils and avoid over watering. ‘Santa Cruz’ tolerates reflected heat making it a good choice for low-maintenance plantings near driveways and roads. This rugged plant is equipped with sturdy thorns so be sure to set back from walkways with high foot-traffic.
