Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ is a large, mounding, shrubby perennial with feathery, silvery gray foliage. Use Artemisia in mixed perennial borders to provide evergreen foliage, color, contrast and texture. Their silvery gray foliage makes a beautiful backdrop for plants with purple or dark foliage, or to highlight rose blooms and other flowers. Artemisia can be used to fill in spaces between other perennials and shrubs. Plants can quickly reach 4- to 5-feet in width and typically grow 2- to 3-feet tall. Be sure to provide enough space for plants to reach their mature width. You can prune ‘Powis Castle’ regularly to control its size and encourage new growth in the center of the plant. Trimmings make excellent additions to cut flower arrangements. Artemisia grows best in full sun. The soil should be of low to average fertility and well drained; plants don’t tolerate wet soils or humid climates and are susceptible to root rot in wet soils. If your Artemisia has begun to look too rangy, cut plants back hard to encourage new growth.
