Cotoneaster ‘Coral Beauty’ is a tough, sun-loving evergreen shrub that features bright red ornamental berries in winter. The flowers and berries attract migrating birds, summer butterflies and bees. Small, leathery, oblong, deep green leaves on stiff branches provide a nice back dark foliage backdrop to blooming plants.Once the berries appear in winter, foliage takes on a reddish-bronze to purple tone, giving it another season of interesting color. When planted in the optimal conditions, Cotoneaster ‘Coral Beauty’ can spread beyond its six-feet growth habit, which makes it a perfect choice for slopes and embankments where soil erosion could be a problem. It is also beautiful in rock gardens and draping over stone walls. Optimal conditions include moist, loamy, well-drained soil and full to part sun. Though it is drought tolerant, ‘Coral Beauty’ can struggle in zones warmer than USDA 7 where it will benefit from extra watering during hot summer months. Cotoneaster ‘Coral Beauty’ can contract fireblight, leaf spots and canker disease if overwatered. In hot and dry climates, watch out for mites. Other pests it can attract when poorly maintained included aphids, cotoneaster webworms and lacebugs. For landscapes that need a unique groundcover that offers up both flowers and berries, Cotoneaster ‘Coral Beauty’ is a great choice.
