Crape myrtles are a favorite summer-blooming tree in warmer climates and there are many colors and sizes to choose from. ‘Arapaho’ Crapemyrtle produces deep cherry-red flowers that linger all summer long and into early fall. One of the more unique features of crape myrtles is their stunning cinnamon-colored bark. Mature specimens make quite the sculptural statement in the landscape. Plants are deciduous, meaning they drop their leaves in winter; but before they do they put on a wonderful fall color show with leaves of orange and red. As with all Crape myrtles, plant in full to part sun for the best growth and flower production. Arapaho Crapemyrtle can tolerate many soil conditions but does best in well draining soils. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant making it a great choice for medians, parking lots, and parks. Despite their hardy nature, all Crapemyrtles can become susceptible to scale or aphid infestations. These opportunistic pests can cause serious damage if left untreated and can lead to sooty mold produced by the honeydew secretions of the sucking insects. Because of its small stature, easy maintenance, pretty blooms and low water usage, Arapaho Crapemyrtle is an excellent tree for a variety of landscape needs.
