Catawba Crapemyrtles are beautiful trees that feature large showy clusters of dark purple flowers that sustain from summer through fall. A unique features of the ‘Catawba’ variety is that flowers tend to be considerably longer lasting compared to other varieties of Crape myrtles. The foliage offers three seasons of color; a handsome bronze cast in spring followed by a medium green in the summer and vibrant orange-red in fall. Catawba crape myrtle makes a lovely small multi- or single-trunk tree that looks beautiful in a variety of landscape styles. As with most crape myrtles, plant in full sun for the best foliage and bloom production. Catawba crape myrtle is very drought tolerant, once established and can tolerate a variety of soil conditions. Sucking insects such as scale and aphids often infest crape myrtles of all types if they are weakened from improper cultural care. If left untreated, the honeydew produced by the insects can cause sooty mold.  Plants are notably mildew resistant compared to other cultivars of crape myrtles.
