Jujube, though uncommon, is one of the easiest fruit trees you can grow. Its narrow habit makes it an ideal choice for small urban landscapes. This tree is drought tolerant and can handle a variety of soil textures. Jujube thrives in heat and needs plenty of direct hot sun. Most jujube varieties are self-pollinating, however production can often be boosted if you plant more than one variety. ‘Li’ is one of the most common cultivars available due to its excellent production. ‘Lang’ is another common variety, and is a great pollinator for ‘Li’, but is not required. Inconspicuous, but somewhat fragrant flowers, form during the spring and fruit ripens July-August. Fruit produced is about 2-3 ounce in size, with the fruit starting out as a yellow-green and then turning to a deep red. Fruit is crisp and sweet, similar to the texture of an apple. If left on the tree, fruit wrinkles and becomes even sweeter with a texture close to a date. Fruit has a tendency to wrinkle more in warmer climates. Jujube are wonderful eaten fresh but also make an excellent addition to baked goods.
