Thuja orientalis ‘Aurea Nana’, or Dwarf Arborvitae, works well as a foundation planting, accent specimen, or container specimen. Its bright chartreuse scaled foliage grows in sprays along the attractive red-brown branches, providing great foliage interest and texture in the landscape. ‘Aurea Nana’ has a similar growth habit to its relatives, conical and columnar, only on a smaller scale. Reaching only 2- to 5-feet in height and 2- to 4-feet in width, this attractive evergreen fits in perfectly in small urban spaces. The evergreen foliage of ‘Aurea Nana’ will have a bronze tinge during the winter months as a response to cold temperatures. This handsome shrub does well in full sun, but will tolerate some light afternoon shade. Arborvitae requires deep watering in summer months and has medium watering requirements once established. Though dwarf arborvitae can tolerate heat and a variety of soil textures, it prefers well-draining and moist soil. ‘Aurea Nana’ is relatively tough, but it can fall victim to sucking insects, bagworms, and cankers, especially when plants are stressed. Water regularly and fertilize to ensure your plants stay vigorous. When planting ‘Aurea Nana’, be sure to not overcrowd the plantings, as they do best with good air circulation.
