Nandina domestica, also called heavenly bamboo, is a time-tested favorite for colorful yet low-maintenance landscapes. Once established, their ease of care and low water needs make them a perfect foundation plant for areas with hot temperatures and minimal rainfall; or access to supplemental irrigation. With evergreen foliage that provides color variation and a strong showing of intense fall color topped with bright red berries, Nandina offers up year-round interest. Nandina tolerates both poor and heavy clay soils and grows nicely in both sun and shade. Plants can spread by root or seed. Due to the organically shaped growth habit of this species, it’s best not to shear plants. Tip prune or cut select stems back to desired height.
